City Montessori school was founded in 1959 by Bharti Gandhi and Jagdish Gandhi. By 2008 its enrollment had reached 32,000 pupils, which is a world record. CMS is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations. The school has been ranked 6th in the "most respected secondary schools" in India list compiled by IMRB in 2007.
UNESCO Peace Prize: CMS was awarded the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education in 2002, the first school in the world to be so honored, in recognition of its efforts "to promote the universal values of education for peace and tolerance at a time when these values are increasingly being challenged".
Service activities: CMS students help their local and national communities. They have founded Eco Clubs, hosted environmental seminars, organized tree plantings and clean up projects, and lobbied state legislature for water pollution control.
In recognition of their service and environmental activitism, the Commissioner Lucknow division appointed CMS students for monitoring and enforcement of the local air pollution guidelines for vehicle emissions.
DEVI Sansthan - standing for Dignity, Education, Vision, International - is a non profit NGO dedicated to empowering rural/ urban poor and women, CMS students have participated in village literacy programmes and worked side by side with village residents to build roads.

CMS, RDSO was established in the year 1964 under the able guidance of Mrs Preeti Kaur. The school evolved and progressed under the leadership of the Principal, Mrs Swapna Mansharamani who is leaving no stone unturned in her efforts of taking the school to new heights with her dedicated hard work and high sense of discipline. As the blue lavender flower that grows on the hillside among the green ferns and are much sought after for their light fragrance and delicate beauty, so grows this unique CMS Branch in one corner of Lucknow attracting students from far and near. The high academic standards focus on total personality development, significance of games and sports and a seriousness of purpose in all its activities give CMS RDSO its special place among all the CMS campuses. Principal Mrs Swapna Mansharamani spares no effort in bringing out the best in each child and inspires the students and teachers to aim high and reach for the stars. EXSPO or Excellence in Sports is an International Sports Olympiad organized by this Branch in which the junior and senior level students participate. Events include all track and field items, sports like judo, karate, badminton, table-tennis, chess and team games like football alongiwth the ever popular cross country run or marathon for boys and girls-sports starts of the country come here to inspire the players.
The Branch also organizes WIZMIC or International Maths Olympiad in which students from different countries gather together to test their skills in mathematics. They also interact with renowned mathematicians of the world.
Annual Parents Day, Sports Day, Model Classes, Divine Education Conferences, Art and Craft Fairs etc are organized by the Branch to give a new meaning to education. In the pre-primary section, students are taught through story enactment, poem recitation, pictures, music and dance which all go to make learning a rich pleasure. The dedicated staff members conduct remedial classes for betterment of children. Home visit scheme and teacher-guardian system bring parents and teachers closer to the children.
Once this distance is abolished between the teacher and the taught, the school becomes an extended family and growth of the child is spontaneous and rapid. In this regards, CMS RDSO has taken great strides and children reared and nurtured here are like the race horses who can Never Say Fail !
